The salwar kameez is believed to have originated from the costumes of the Mughals, who were the Muslim rulers of India. Originally the traditional dress of the Punjab region, the salwar kameez gradually became popular among women throughout India. The salwar kameez, popularly known as Salwar suit, is the traditional dress of women in the Punjab region of northwestern India and eastern Pakistan. The outfit comprises a pair of trousers (salwar) and a tunic (kameez) that is usually paired with a scarf (dupatta).
